Mental Health Evaluations in Colorado Springs

Understanding What Is Going On Is the First Step

A mental health evaluation is not a box to check. It is the foundation everything else is built on.

Without a thorough evaluation, treatment plans are built on incomplete information. Medications get prescribed for symptoms rather than diagnoses. Conditions that are driving the picture, ADHD underneath the anxiety, bipolar disorder underneath the depression, PTSD underneath what looks like a personality issue, go unidentified for years while someone keeps trying treatments that are only partially aimed at the right target.

At Sage Psychiatry Services, a psychiatric evaluation is a full, unhurried assessment of your current symptoms, your history, your prior treatment experiences, and the broader context of your life. It is where care at Sage begins for every new patient, and it is what makes the care that follows more accurate and more effective.

What a Mental Health Evaluation Covers

A psychiatric evaluation at Sage is a structured clinical interview, not a questionnaire. It covers:

  • Your current symptoms and how they affect your daily life
  • When your symptoms started and how they have changed over time
  • Your personal and family psychiatric history
  • Prior diagnoses and whether they have felt accurate to you
  • Medications you have taken and how each one affected you
  • Medical history and any physical health factors that may be relevant
  • Whether lab work is needed to check for physical factors, like thyroid or vitamin levels, that can contribute to or mimic psychiatric symptoms
  • Sleep, lifestyle, and environmental factors that can contribute to psychiatric symptoms
  • Your goals for care and what you are hoping to get out of treatment

As part of this process, we routinely order labs, and sometimes more extensive ones, since certain lab findings can contribute to symptoms in ways that are not obvious without testing.

This takes time, and we do not rush it. The quality of the evaluation shapes the accuracy of the diagnosis and the usefulness of the treatment plan that follows.

Who Should Get a Mental Health Evaluation

A psychiatric evaluation makes sense if:

  • You have been experiencing symptoms and have never had a thorough psychiatric assessment
  • You have a prior diagnosis that does not feel quite right, or that was made quickly without much depth
  • You have been in treatment but have not made the progress you expected, and want to understand why
  • You are starting psychiatric care for the first time and want a clear picture of what is going on before any treatment decisions are made
  • You need documentation of a diagnosis for work accommodations, school supports, or other purposes
  • A primary care provider, therapist, or other clinician has recommended a psychiatric evaluation
  • You are looking to transfer care from a previous psychiatric provider, whether they moved, retired, or are no longer available, and want to continue an established treatment plan

If you are on a medication regimen that is already working well, our goal is continuity, not change for its own sake. We will take over your care and keep what’s working in place.

Many of the patients who come to Sage for evaluations have been carrying a diagnosis they are not sure fits, or have been in treatment for years without a clear explanation of what the diagnosis means for them.

What Happens After the Evaluation

The evaluation produces a clinical picture, not just a label. At the end of your initial assessment, you will have a clearer understanding of what is going on, what conditions are present and how they relate to each other, what has and has not worked in prior treatment and why, and what your options are going forward.

From there, treatment planning begins. This may involve:

  • Medication management if medications are part of the recommended approach
  • A referral to therapy or coordination with a therapist you are already seeing
  • Further assessment for specific conditions if the initial evaluation raises questions that warrant a closer look
  • A clear plan for follow-up and ongoing care

Nothing is started without a conversation about what the findings mean and what your options are.

Common Conditions Identified Through Psychiatric Evaluation

A thorough evaluation can identify a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety, panic disorder, and social anxiety
  • Mood disorders, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar depression
  • ADHD in adults and adolescents, including presentations that were missed in childhood
  • Bipolar disorder, including cases that were previously treated only as depression
  • PTSD and trauma-related conditions
  • OCD and related conditions
  • Postpartum and perinatal mental health conditions

We provide psychiatric services in Colorado Springs for all of these conditions and more.
