Psychiatry in Montana

Sage Psychiatry Services is a board-certified psychiatric practice serving patients throughout Montana. Whether you are in Bozeman, Missoula, Billings, Helena, a smaller community, or a rural part of the state where local psychiatric care is difficult to access, we offer individualized, appointment-based psychiatric care via telehealth.

Our providers are licensed in Montana and bring the same approach to every Montana patient as to our Colorado Springs practice: thorough evaluations, careful medication management, and a provider relationship built to last rather than built for volume. Sage Psychiatry maintains a physical presence in Montana, and in-person appointments may be available for patients in the area when scheduling supports it.

Telehealth-First Care for Montana Patients

Montana has one of the most significant psychiatric care shortages in the country. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, large portions of Montana are designated as mental health professional shortage areas, meaning the ratio of patients to available providers falls well below federal thresholds. In many parts of the state, the nearest in-person psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner is hours away, and wait times for new patient appointments are long even in larger cities. Telehealth does not solve all of that, but it removes one significant barrier: you do not have to live near a provider to have access to one.

Telehealth appointments at Sage take place through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You will receive a link before your appointment, and the visit happens from wherever you have a reliable internet connection, your home, your office, or anywhere else that works for you.

The care itself is the same as in-person psychiatric care. Your first appointment is a full psychiatric evaluation. Subsequent appointments cover how your treatment is working, medication adjustments as needed, and the ongoing management of your care over time. You see the same provider at every visit.

In-Person Appointments in Montana

Sage Psychiatry does offer in-person appointments in Montana at this time. As the practice grows, in-person visits may become available. If this is something you are interested in, contact us and we can update you as options change.

Who We See in Montana

We work with adults and adolescents across a wide range of psychiatric conditions. Montana patients come to Sage for a variety of reasons:

Patients who have tried to find a local provider and could not get in. Montana’s psychiatric care capacity is limited. If you have been waiting months for an appointment or have been told a practice is not accepting new patients, telehealth through Sage may be an option.

Patients who were seen in prior states and need to continue care in Montana. Whether you moved to Montana for work, retirement, or other reasons, Sage can continue psychiatric care that started elsewhere or begin a new patient relationship if you are starting fresh.

Patients managing complex or treatment-resistant conditions. Sage has specific experience with complex presentations that have not responded well to prior treatment, including cases where multiple medications have been tried without adequate results.

Patients who are pregnant, postpartum, or in the perinatal period. Psychiatric care during pregnancy and in the months following delivery requires specific clinical experience. We provide evaluation and treatment for the full range of perinatal mental health conditions, including postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and perinatal OCD.

Veterans and military family members. Sage accepts Tricare and has experience working with veterans navigating PTSD, depression, ADHD, and the psychiatric challenges that often follow military service or transition.

How Telehealth Psychiatry Works at Sage Psychiatry

For patients who are new to telehealth, the process is straightforward.

You schedule an initial evaluation through our scheduling platform. Before your appointment, you will receive a secure link to join the video visit.

The evaluation covers your current symptoms, your psychiatric history, any prior diagnoses and treatments, and the medications you are currently taking.

From there, your treatment plan is built and follow-up appointments are scheduled at intervals that match your clinical needs. Most patients on ongoing medication management are seen every four to eight weeks for follow-up appointments, though this varies based on your situation.
